Axles

Front, intermediate and rear axles

A drive axle is a critical assembly of a vehicle’s transmission. It is responsible for transmitting power from the transmission or engine to the wheels that provide the vehicle’s propulsion.

In most cases, drive axles are found on rear-wheel drive or front-wheel drive vehicles, but there can also be two or more drive axles on the same vehicle.

They can be connected to the engine or transmission through a variety of mechanisms, such as drive shafts and differentials, depending on the vehicle design.
